Healthy ‘Ed’ition: A Day in the Life

All September 14, 2016

I’m often asked how I find the time: work, family and training for a marathon. Well, there’s no magic formula. I know, that’s probably not what you wanted to hear. Your balancing act will undoubtedly look different than mine, but one thing is for sure: you need to be able to focus on what’s important without distractions hijacking your time.

Training for an event like this adds at least 7-10 hours to your week, and remaining healthy during training is a necessity. But what if something goes wrong? How do you find time to deal with it? In my mind, I’m still young, but at 50, my body fights back—aches, pains and strains are typical. This is where Ultimate Health plays a pivotal role. If something happens, your solution is literally only a call away. It makes everything easier so that you can focus on your priorities.

I’ve been pretty lucky thus far in my training, but knowing that Ultimate Health is there if something does happen helps keep my mind at ease and my schedule on track.

Here’s a typical day in my life:

When I wake up, I usually grab some coffee, check on emails and plan for the day.

I like to get in a 60-90 minute run, bike or swim. Not only is this vital to my training, but it provides momentum for heading into the work day.  This also gives me time to really focus in on what I need to accomplish and prioritize for the day.

Before school and work, we all have breakfast as a family. This is important ‘no screen’ time to together. Then I’ll head into work a bit early to prepare for the day.

Depending on the day, I may be booked with meetings, working with partners or the sales team, or developing a new product plan. My job requires many hats so I have to be ready to switch gears quickly.

Lunch time. Food is the nourishment that drives your life. Your rocket fuel, if you will. Don’t put anything in you that won’t propel you forward, especially when training. I’ll either grab a protein packed salad from the place next door or bring something fresh from home.

Fall is our busy season (I picked the best time to run a marathon, huh?), so presentations are frequent and important. That can sometimes take up the entire afternoon.

Before heading home, I usually organize myself for the next day. This week, I actually had to file a claim from my executive physical. Using the mobile app that comes with Ultimate Health, I could do this right from my office with just my phone and its camera. Like I said, easy!

Before dinner, I spend time with my kids and catch up on some to do’s. After dinner, I may go for a light jog, play golf with the kids, help my wife around the house or catch up on some emails. It’s important to take advantage of this downtime to re-energize and get ready to do it all again!
